SCHOOL OF INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES AND EXTENDED EDUCATIONSusan Elkins, Dean The School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Extended Education is a University-wide service division which promotes educational, social, economic, and cultural development and welfare in Tennessee, particularly in the Upper Cumberland region and surrounding counties. This mission is carried out through the delivery of credit and non-credit offerings, at both on-campus and at off-campus locations in the service area. Deans, departmental chairpersons, and University faculty members participate in the off-campus advisory and instructional program to insure that courses offered are of the same quality as those taught on the main campus. Partnering with academic and administrative units, highly qualified personnel from business, industry and various educational agencies are utilized to provide direction and instruction for conferences, seminars, workshops, and special events. The School of Interdisciplinary Studies was established in Spring 2001 to provide a flexible environment for faculty from various departments and colleges who have the common interest of producing innovative baccalaureate degrees to meet developing educational needs. The school's first degree program is the Regents Online Degree Program that offers the Bachelor of Science of Professional Studies and the Bachelor of Science of Interdisciplinary Studies. Extended Education provides service and outreach through delivery of courses to the TTU community in Cookeville, the Upper Cumberland region, and throughout the entire service area of the University. Courses and activities are offered at off-campus sites in thirty-five counties; on-campus during evenings and weekends to accommodate student schedules; through workshops, conferences, seminars, and special events; and via various distance learning delivery methods. Assistance with scheduling and registration for Interdisciplinary Studies and Extended Education courses is provided by the campus Interdisciplinary Studies and Extended Education staff and coordinators at each off-campus location. CREDIT OFFERINGS The School of Interdisciplinary Studies and Extended Education assumes responsibility for scheduling and arranging courses for instruction at approved off-campus sites which are concentrated at locations recommended by the University and approved by the Tennessee Board of Regents and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission. Higher Education centers are operated collaboratively with Roane State Community College in Crossville and Scott County, Motlow State Community College in McMinnville, and with Volunteer State Community College in Livingston. Under the auspices of this agreement, students are provided the opportunity to work toward the Associate, Baccalaureate, Master's and Specialist degrees. Courses are offered at the remaining sites in the service area in response to a well-documented need. NON-CREDIT OFFERINGS Non-credit courses are offered to meet the needs of individuals, groups, and organizations both on-campus and off-campus. Participants need not satisfy specific educational requirements for admission to most courses. Continuing Education Units (CEU's) are awarded and recorded for many non-credit courses, while others are offered strictly on a non-credit basis. Fees for non-credit courses vary and are based upon the cost of offering the course. |
