University Faculty Meeting Minutes

Dr. Leo McGee, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs, called the opening faculty meeting to order at 10:05 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, 2004, in Derryberry Hall Auditorium. Dr. McGee welcomed everyone to campus and made introductory remarks.

Reports

Dr. Linda Null, President of the Faculty Senate, recognized the members of the Faculty Senate who were present at the meeting. She stated that the purpose of the Faculty Senate is to be the voice of the faculty, and she urged faculty members to share issues and concerns with Senators.

Dr. Sharon Whitney, President of the TTU Chapter of the American Association of University Professors, said that two of the goals of AAUP are: (1) academic freedom, which is best done through tenure and (2) shared governance. She invited everyone to the first AAUP meeting on September 3 in the University Center. If any of the new members did not receive the AAUP Guidebook for New Faculty, they should let Dr. Whitney know. New AAUP officers are Kristin Walker, Vice President, and Bill Fisk, Secretary.

Professor Ray Jordan, President of the TTU chapter of the Tennessee Education Association, invited faculty members to join NEA, TEA, and the local organization. Professor Jordan outlined several of the benefits of TEA membership, and he said that faculty would receive something from TEA in the mail soon.

Introduction of New Administrators

Dr. Bell introduced new administrators, Mr. Mark Wilson, Director of Athletics, and Dr. Susan Gutkind, Athletics Academic Advisor.

Introduction of New Faculty

Provost Barker welcomed and introduced by college new tenure track faculty and new faculty members with term appointments. New Faculty >.He also made announcements related to several academic units, and he introduced two new administrators, Mr. Timothy Weber, Director of the Craft Center, and Mr. Charles Wilkerson, Director of International Student Affairs.

Recognition of Newly Tenured and Promoted Faculty

Dr. Barker recognized the faculty members who received tenure and/or promotion effective with the Fall Semester 2004. Tenured and Promoted Faculty >

President's Address

President Bell welcomed new and returning faculty to the campus, and he recognized several leaders on campus: Dr. Linda Null, President of the Faculty Senate; Dr. Jeff Roberts, Chair, Academic Council; Dr. Linda Giesbrecht-Bettoli, Chair, Administrative Council; and Ms. Julie Galloway, Chair, University Curriculum Committee. Also recognized were award recipients: Dr. Jann Cupp and Dr. Joseph Rasmussen, Outstanding Faculty Awards inTeaching; Dr. Sue Bailey, Outstanding Faculty Award in Professional Service; Dr. Ali Alouani, Kinslow Research Award; Professor Winston Morris, Caplenor Faculty Research Award, and Dr. Stuart Wells, Harold Love Community Service Award.

President Bell reported that the University Vision Committee will present the new university vision statement this fall. He cited Tech's ranking in U.S. News and World Report and in the Princeton Review, and he presented a video that was prepared for the TBR meeting that was held on the Tech campus in June.

Presentation of Service Pins

With the assistance of the deans, President Bell recognized 52 faculty members for their years of service to Tech and presented service pins to those in attendance. Among those recognized was Christine Jones in the University Library, who received a service pin and gift for 55 years of service.

Announcements

Professor Rebecca Tolbert introduced Cynthia Webster, Director of the Counseling Center. Ms. Webster said that additional brochures like the ones that were distributed at the door could be obtained from the Counseling Center, and she reminded the faculty of the services available, including workshops for students and a new web site.

Professor Tolbert reported that the Lottery did not increase our enrollment, which is expected to remain about the same as last year. She thanked the faculty, the deans, and the chairs for their help during the SOAR sessions and for their help in offering General Education courses. She said some changes are anticipated in Athletics advising. Professor Tolbert extended an invitation to the faculty luncheon in the Multipurpose Room immediately following the meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:40 a.m.
