Diesel named Florida Athletic Director of the Year

Former Golden Eagle football standout Dan Diesel (’83) has received several awards during his 25 years of teaching and coaching at Titusville (Fla.) High School, including the school’s 1994 Teacher of the Year award.

But Diesel, who played football at Tech for three seasons and also lettered one year on the Tech wrestling team, recently received an honor that he says topped all of the others – he was voted the 2007 Florida Athletic Director of the Year.

“Dan Diesel is first and foremost an outstanding person,” according to Dr. Richard A. DiPatri, Brevard (Fla.) County Public Schools Superintendent.

“Dan is an extraordinary teacher, coach and athletic director who fosters student achievement both on and off the field. Individuals like Dan are instrumental in providing opportunities for students to enjoy success now and in the future.”

“I feel that I have been living my dream since the day I returned to my alma mater,” Diesel said. “A lot of kids are not sure what they want to do when they grow up. I knew I wanted to work with kids and make a difference in their lives.”

Among the awards he has received over his coaching career are All-Space Coast Boys’ Golf Coach of the Year for three years and Cape Coast Conference Boys’ and Girls’ Golf Coach of the Year. He was also two-time Class 5A district football coach of the year.

Diesel looks back on his years at Tech with great pride.

“I really loved Cookeville,” he says. “I have never known any place else where the people are so friendly. Tennessee Tech is really near and dear to my heart.”

He and his wife, Barbara, have been married for 28 years. Their first “home” was in Tech Village.

“I still remember the address, J-2 East,” he says.
