Football team to play at Louisville, Western Michigan

Two big challenges await the Tech football team early in the 2008 season as the Golden Eagles step up to play two teams in the Bowl Championship
Subdivision (BCS).

Tech visits Louisville for a game on Sept. 6 against one of the most explosive teams in the Big East Conference. Two weeks later, the Golden Eagles head to Kalamazoo to meet the Western Michigan Broncos of the Mid-American Conference.

“These types of games do two things for us,” said coach Watson Brown. “They provide exposure for our program and they’re good financially for the whole athletic department.

“With only eight seniors, we’re going to be a really young team, which will make it even more challenging,” Brown said.

The Cardinals host the first meeting between the two schools since 1961. Tech is 1-1 against Louisville, which was a charter member of the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948. Last season, Louisville finished sixth in the country in total offense, fourth in passing offense and 18th in scoring.

“Louisville is a great atmosphere, and I think our kids, our fans and our alumni will really enjoy it,” Brown said.

After opening last season 0-3, WMU posted a 5-7 overall record. That includes wins in their final two games, highlighted by a 28-19 victory on the road at Iowa.

It will be the first meeting between Tech and WMU on the gridiron.

“These games will really challenge us,” Brown said. “We had a tough decision to make in the offseason, and that was whether to recruit junior college players or to go with freshmen. Since it’s so early in rebuilding the program, I went young. We might pay for that early on, but I think it’s the right way to go for us to win OVC Championships.”
