Story of Tech's Drew Hixon included in sportswriting collection

When Eli Saslow’s update on former Golden Eagle Drew Hixon (“A New Game Plan”) appeared in The Washington Post magazine early in 2007, readers of that newspaper learned the latest on the former Tech wide receiver.

The story brought readers up-to-date on Hixon’s recovery and progress toward his career goals following his injury and four-month coma. His head injury during the Sept. 11, 2004, game at South Florida brought national concern and prayers for Hixon and his
family, and the Tech football team and university.

Saslow’s story was brilliantly written with compassion and insight, and a great deal of back-story and dialogue. It was such a well-written, compelling story, in fact, that editor David Maraniss selected it from among thousands of entries to be included as one of the 28 articles published in the book “The Best American Sports Writing” for 2007.
