Tech has announced the appointment of Jack Armistead as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. Armistead, who joined TTU in 1995 as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, accepted the interim post in July 2007 upon Marvin Barker’s retirement. After a nationwide search, Armistead was chosen to help lead the university as its chief academic officer. “I am delighted that Jack Armistead will be leading the campus in the role of provost and vice president for Academic Affairs,” said President Bob Bell. “He brings a wealth of experience to the position, and is a seasoned, well-tested leader accustomed to leading a complex and diverse organization. “Jack is known across the campus as a caring and inclusive leader, but is also a person I’ve known to be visionary and decisive,” Bell said. “I look forward to working with him as we continue to develop the strategic vision for the university, and as we develop many new campus leaders.” Before joining TTU, Armistead served as dean of the College of Letters and Sciences at James Madison University from 1991 to 1995. As a faculty member at the University of Tennessee — Knoxville from 1975 to 1991, he served as director of undergraduate studies in English and then as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Armistead earned his doctorate and master’s degree in English and American Literature from Duke University and his bachelor’s degree in Arts and Letters from Michigan State University. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty from 1970 to 1972. Armistead is the author of two books, editor or co-editor of three books, one series and a scholarly journal, and author of 33 articles and 18 reviews. |

As vice president for academic affairs, Armistead is directly responsible to the president for the development, coordination, and implementation of curricula and instruction at the university. He serves as adviser to the president on academic affairs and as spokesman for the faculty, departmental chairpersons and academic deans with regard to matters concerning the instructional program, budget proposals and academic personnel policies.
