Dr. Elkins administers the University's outreach and extension programs that include distance learning, off-campus programs, special courses and events, public service initiatives, grants and special projects, and regional development activities. The position also works closely with non-traditional students in the University and throughout the region. Dr. Elkins also serves as Dean of the School of Interdisciplinary Studies and is an associate professor in the College of Education.

Michelle coordinates service learning and civic engagement for students with scholarships, students who are part of service learning courses, student organizations, as well as coordinates annual days of service for students and faculty to participate in. Getting students involved in the community helps to keep them involved at the university.
