A group of manufacturing and industrial technology students at Tennessee Tech University is taking a process that already reduces waste and cost and trying to make it even cleaner.

At the same time, they’re turning one department’s trash into another’s treasure by recycling the campus’ canola oil used for frying and converting it to bio-diesel fuel that can be used to run vehicles and machinery for the School of Agriculture and other university units.

The project exemplifies TTU’s focus on sustainability efforts by substituting a reusable dry-wash polymer for a process that traditionally uses a significant amount of water, says Ahmed ElSawy, manufacturing engineering technology chairperson.
