Dr. Mark Groundland came to Tennessee Technological University in 2005 to teach Spanish language, culture, and literature courses and became Interim Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages in June 2013. His research interests include early modern Spanish literature and culture, Cervantes and the comedia in particular. Additionally, Dr. Groundland has been actively indexing journal articles as a bibliographer for the MLA (Modern Languages Association) International Bibliography since 1997.

My areas of specialization include: French medieval literature, the reception of the French epic in nineteenth-century France, nineteenth-century French civilization and culture, (particularly concerning nationationalism and the colonization of Algeria), and recent French films concerning the integration of French citizens descended from Maghrebians into French culture.

Dr. Villalba is a new faculty member of the Department of Foreign Languages. Originally from Spain, he received his B.A. in Hispanic Philology from the Universidad de Valladolid (Spain), and his Ph.D. in Spanish, with a designated emphasis in Critical Theory, from the University of California, Davis. Before joining the TTU family, he taught Spanish language, culture and literature at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Villalba’s research interests include modern and contemporary Spanish literature, Spanish cinema, critical theory, film theory, psychoanalysis, trauma, memory, exile and migration. He has published several articles on 1939 Spanish exile authors and also on Spanish contemporary narrative.
