CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AS A REWARDING CAREER
Our faculty and staff are proud to be members of a century old profession with an exciting future and tremendous promise for continued growth that is vital for the scientific and technological advances that improve and benefit many aspects of our society. Chemical Engineering is a highly respected profession that deals with a molecular level understanding, motion and transformation of raw materials (inorganic, organic, and biological) and with the scaling (up and down) of processes to meet customer demand in a wide variety of products. These processes include, for example, those in manufacturing, biotechnology (pharmaceutical, medical, and food), microelectronics, health care and cosmetics, environmental, and petrochemical, just to name a few. Chemical engineers have been pivotal in the discovery of new materials, such as synthetic fibers used widely in households every day, in improving environmental control strategies to help in conservation efforts, and in saving energy by designing new and more efficient processes that impact everything in our everyday life. Chemical Engineers have proposed and developed new artificial devices to assist and/or improve human lives, and are even among an elite group of Nobel Laureates!
INNOVATION-DRIVEN RESEARCH AND LEARNING WITH DIVERSE, GLOBAL AWARENESS
As the founding fathers of our Home Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), have stated our mission: "Our Business is Education." Following this vision, at Tennessee Technological University, Chemical Engineering is vibrant community of distinguished scholars and highly motivated educators, who bring the excitement of cutting-edge research to classroom and lab settings with advanced pedagogical and technological learning approaches. In fact, our Chemical Engineers have proved to be highly innovative and entrepreneurial with co-authorship of patents of new technology and start-up chemical companies. The Department has a nationally leading hands-on, team-based learning, and critical thinking curriculum in line with the USA-NAE 2020 Engineering Model. In fact, the whole program is, effectively, a “Da Vinci Foundry” where the future Chemical Engineer is developed as an effective Renaissance Engineer with a societal impact skill set from a global perspective. The Department strongly supports diversity and it is proud of graduating the largest number of female engineers within the TTU College of Engineering. In addition, in collaboration with our International Student Office, the Department has increased the number of international students from a variety of countries located in Europe, Middle and Far East, and Latin America bringing a global perspective within the classes.
The faculty and students are active in publishing in widely-circulated, peer-reviewed journals and presenting in professional society technical meetings. Our faculty are officers or contributors in professional organizations such as the AIChE, the American Electrophoresis Society, the Electrochemical Society, the Ceramics Society, the American Chemical Society, the American Concrete Institute, and the American Society for Engineering Education. They have achieved recognition at the university, state, national, and international levels. A summary of their achievements can be found in their personal faculty pages. Faculty and student accomplishments make us proud of our efforts and motivate us to achieve the next level of excellence.
THE DEPARTMENT CONTINUOUS STRIVING EFFORTS FOR ACHIVIENING EXCELLENCE
The TTU Chemical Engineering Team has championed an integrated approach to research and education where scholarly activities are seamlessly dispersed across the curriculum as a continuous spectrum of possibilities for students at the undergraduate to postdoctoral levels. Two excellent examples are the successful Biomolecular Engineering Concentration and the mobile-based computational platform for learning (MoLE-SI) in addition to our focus on doctoral level research as part of the Engineering PhD Program. Our university flagship magazine, Visions, and an invited article in Chemical Engineering Education describe this approach and its successful outcomes in great detail. For example, our students have graduated and pursued graduate degrees at some of the country's most prestigious institutions. Among other accomplishments, we have also seen our graduates being hired by major employers in the state and region and our PhD’s winning prestigious national and international awards.
Faculty members from our Department have organized international meetings or have been invited to assist with and/or to set new directions in research and education and have attracted the attention of other colleagues from leading institutions in the country. Our efforts continue to bring exciting opportunities to our graduate and undergraduate students, and we remain committed to excelling as a leading Chemical Engineering Department within the Southeast.
