NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP)

This program provides educational opportunities for Undergraduate Students, Graduate Students. 

The Office of Research wants to remind you that the National Science Foundation announced the fall deadlines for students to apply to the Graduate Research Fellowship program. The GRFP provides three years of support for the graduate education of eligible individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant research achievements in STEM or STEM education. Applications for this program are submitted directly by the student in the GRFP Application Module (; however, we ask that all students planning to apply contact Jamie Murdock at ( so we can ensure that all applicable internal paperwork is prepared prior to submission. Idea Challenge Nov. 11 - $2,000 in prizes!

  • Who: All students, all programs, across campus!
  • What: Come up with an idea for a product, business, service, etc. Give a 90 second pitch in front of our panel of judges and compete for a $1,000 first prize!
  • Why: Creative problem solving, gain confidence, share an idea, win prizes, and have fun!
  • When: Wednesday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m.
  • Where: Wherever you are! This year’s challenge is virtual!

Students can compete alone or in teams, and will have 90 seconds to pitch their idea – no PowerPoint, no Q&A. Your idea doesn’t need to be fully thought out, but it should be feasible and solve a problem. Get creative and think big! Multiple prizes will be awarded!

There will be two virtual workshops on Oct. 21 & 28 at 6 p.m. to help prepare for the challenge – watch Tech Times or for more details and to register!

The Holistic Foundry Undergraduate Engaged Learners (FUEL) program is recruiting 30 undergraduate freshmen and sophomore engineering majors who are interested in engaging in research that is both socially impactful and relevant. FUEL students will work with our Rural Reimagined economic partners to develop student-team research projects geared towards positively affecting our local region.  This program will feature research training, presentation opportunities, outreach opportunities, and a chance to earn a $600 stipend. Recruitment is underway for fall 2020 and spring 2021 for Graduate Research Assistants in Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering at the University of Tennessee Space Institute located in Tullahoma, Tennessee. Recipients will receive a monthly stipend that includes tuition, maintenance fees, and health insurance. To be eligible for a graduate research assistantship you must be a full-time student.
