  • Bachelor of Music in Music Education

    Bachelor of Music in Music Education: 
    The music education curriculum is designed for student who wish to become school band, choir, or orchestra directors. Classes in music history, music theory, pedagogy, and conducting are combined are combined with private studio instruction and large ensemble performance opportunities. This degree (which leads to Tennessee Teacher Liscensure) requires admission to the Teacher Education Program in the College of Education.  

    TTU music educators consistently excel, lead, and innovate in their professional fields, which includes:
    *receiving graduate fellowships from more than 50 universities and schools of music; 
    *teaching as school band, choral, and orchestra directors and music teachers in over 26 states;
    *serving as professors or administrators at 70 universities and colleges;
    *leading state-wide professional associations;
    *becoming directors of music for major metropolitan school districts.

    Bachelor of Music in Performance:
    Instrumental, Vocal, Jazz, Composition

    The music performance curriculum is designed for student who wish to perform professionally with orcehstras, miliary bands, jazz bands, opera companies, or in musical theater. This course of study also prepares students to pursue graduate degrees at the master's and doctoral levels in preparation for a university teaching career. Classes in music history, music theory, and advanced private studio instruction are combined with extensive solo, chamber, and large ensemble performance opportunities.  

    Instrumental, Vocal and Composition majors have graduated to a wealth of professional performance careers, including...
    *recording albums for major artists in all styles, and sound tracks for major television shows, motion pictures and video games;
    *being awarded the recording industry's "Certified Platinum" for more than a million albums sold;
    *working as performers and conductors with many professional orchestras and opera companies, including the Vienna, Berlin and Brazil Philharmonics; the Atlanta, Baltimore, Knoxville, Nashville and London Symphony Orchestras; and the Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera, and Metropolitan Opera companies;
    *working with touring groups and shows, for all major cruise lines, and at most major theme parks in the U.S. and in Japan and Hong Kong;
    *representing membership in all of the military bands in Washington, D.C., and at West Point and Annapolis;
    *performing live with dozens of the world's best-known performers and entertainers.

    Minor Requirements:
    MUS 1030 Music Appreciation / 3 credits
    MUS 1120 Harmony I / 3 credits
    MUS 3010 Music History I / 3 credits (prerequisite: MUS 1030)
    MUS 3020 Music History II / 3 credits (prerequisite: MUS 1030)
    MUS ---- Private Lessons / 2 credits (two semesters required)
    MUS ---- Ensemble / 1 credit

    TOTAL: 15 credits
