Trumpet Studio

Trumpet students at Tennessee Tech will get weekly one-on-one lessons with Dr. Hagarty, occasional group studio classes and the opportunity to work with world-class visiting guest artists. There are many ensemble opportunities for trumpet students including the Marching Band, Wind Ensemble, University Orchestra, Jazz Bands, and Trumpet Ensemble among others. One trumpet student each semester will get a chance to perform alongside the Tech trumpet faculty in the Bryan Symphony Orchestra, earning the experience of performing in a professional orchestra. This is by competitive audition only. The Tech trumpet studio has over 40 trumpets and cornets in the collection that are available for students to check out during the fall and spring semesters, including B-flat, C, E-flat, D and piccolo trumpets by a variety of different brands and makers.

Trumpet Ensemble

The Trumpet Ensemble is an important extension of the studio and performs music ranging from 3 to 15 parts. It has premiered more than 70 compositions, 13 of which are published. The ensemble has performed at the International Trumpet Guild Conference, Tennessee Music Educators Conference, and appeared on PBS television stations across the country in two Christmas concert specials. It has won majors awards at the National Trumpet Competition and was the first trumpet ensemble to present a complete concert at the world famous Streitweiser Trumpet Museum.

Numerous works created for the Tech Trumpet Ensemble have been performed by professionals at major music conferences for the International Trumpet Guild and National Trumpet Competition. The ensemble’s repertoire includes symphonic excerpts, original compositions, transcriptions of music from 1500 to the 20th century, as well as pop and jazz arrangements.

International Trumpet Guild

It is recommend that trumpet majors join the International Trumpet Guild. The organization has more than 8,000 trumpeters of all ages including students, professionals and amateurs. Annual membership gives you a terrific return on your money as you receive four journals (each with 100+ pages), solo or trumpet ensemble sheet music, and a CD of trumpet solos. Their many publications include a CD-ROM of all ITG Journal articles published from 1976 to 1998 (a virtual trumpet encyclopedia), solo trumpet recordings, music, and books. The extensive website is open to non-members and has free downloads of trumpet resource information and links to many other trumpet sites.

What the Pros Say About Trumpet at Tech

"I was impressed by the musicianship of your students as well as their off-stage behavior. Your Trumpet Ensemble performance brought universal praise." Ralph Dudgeon, nationally recognized trumpet scholar and performer

"The Tech Trumpet Ensemble is a stylish and musical group which is very tight and professional." National Trumpet Competition jurors

"I expected Tech’s Trumpet Ensemble to be very good, but I was wrong - they were marvelous! The level of musicianship displayed was as awesome as the degree of preparation. I was honored to perform the Stözel Concerto with you." Vincent DiMartino, international trumpet soloist and President of the International Trumpet Guild
