Learning Support

We provide academic support for students who need assistance in developing their skills in math, reading, and writing. Learning Support is located in Room 360 of the Volpe Library.

  • Math

    Students are placed in math classes based on their ACCUPLACER or ACT scores. They can challenge that placement by taking/retaking the math portion of the ACCUPLACER exam.

  • Reading

    Students are placed in reading classes based on their ACCUPLACER or ACT scores. They can challenge that placement by taking/retaking the reading portion of the ACCUPLACER exam.

    *If your ACT-Reading subject score is 17-18, you may take a reading-intensive class (history, sociology, psychology, philosophy, government, political science, criminal justice) at the same time as READ1010. If your score is 15-16, you should complete READ1010 before beginning a reading-intensive class.

  • Writing

    Students are placed in English classes based on their ACCUPLACER or ACT scores. They can challenge that placement by taking/retaking the writing portion of the ACCUPLACER exam.

  • UNIV1030 Learning Strategies

    The UNIV1030 course, Learning Strategies, is for students who place into two or more learning support classes (ESL1010, ESL1020, READ1010, READ1100, MATH1000, “L” section of a MATH class).

    This course covers the following to promote student success:

    • critical thinking/problem solving
    • study strategies (reading, note taking, test taking)
    • communication skills
    • self-management (time management, etc.)
    • classroom demeanor
    • campus resources, including library
    • other pertinent topics
