Claudia Harke, of Appleton, Wis., was one of five finalists for Tennessee Tech University’s most prestigious student award.

Harke, daughter of Ron and Nancy Harke, is a senior economics major. She will graduate this spring and attend the University of Wisconsin Law School.

The Derryberry Award, named for Tennessee Tech’s longest-serving president Everett Derryberry, goes annually to a graduating senior who has exhibited characteristics that demonstrate potential for future service and effective leadership in American society.

Harke was a member of the Honors Program and the pre-law society. She served as vice president of the student-athlete advisory committee, which helps to plan community service activities and provide insight on the student-athlete experience. She is a captain of the TTU softball team, a volunteer for the campus’ summer softball camp and a fastpitch instructor.

She is a member of Omnicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society, and Beta Gamma Sigma, the international honor society for business students. She also tutored fellow student-athletes in business courses.

She is a graduate of Kimberly High School.
