TTU News

thumb_Anne_ThurmondAnne ThurmondThe Tennessee Tech University Department of Music and Art presents Anne Thurmond in a faculty clarinet recital at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7. This free recital will be held in Wattenbarger Auditorium in the Fine Arts Building on the Tennessee Tech campus.

Thurmond begins her 10th year on the faculty at TTU, where she performs with the Bryan Symphony Orchestra and the Cumberland Quintet. She has chosen an enjoyable collection of chamber music, which also features pianist Paul Thurmond.

The program will begin with a set of variations on a melody from the opera "Silvana" by Carl Maria von Weber. Weber composed the variations to this simple, lovely melody while on a concert tour with German clarinetist, Heinrich Baermann.

"Dance Preludes" by 20th Century composer Witold Lutoslawski, shows the influence of Polish folk music, both in melody and harmony.

Italian composer Nino Rota is best known for his film scores, including "The Godfather." His sonata for clarinet and piano is a beautiful work in a very romantic style.

The last piece on the program is Leonard Bernstein's Sonata. This is the first piece he published, and Bernstein's style shows with reflective, lyrical melodies as well as lively, Latin-influenced dance sections.
