Nancy Raen-Mendez’s subjects radiate out in concentric circles. Her drawings will be on display now through Nov. 29 in the Joan Derryberry Art Gallery as part of the Center Stage series.
She will host a gallery talk Nov. 29 at 4:30.
Raen-Mendez was born in Boston and currently teaches full-time at the University of Southern Indiana in the art and design department. She teaches courses related to drawing and two-dimensional design and has exhibited her artwork nationally and internationally.
She has a bachelor of fine arts and master in art education from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a master of fine arts in painting from the University of Cincinnati. She has been a part of many fellowships and won a variety of awards.
“As an artist, I am also playing the part of observer and documentarian,” she said in her artist statement. “In my current work, I am reacting to the wisdom and ignorance of variously sized groups of people. I am interested in the dynamics of social groups and how they often have larger social and political implications.”
