She was the force behind the largest medical settlement lawsuit in history. Her story was made into an Academy Award-winning film starring Julia Roberts. She is asked to help in environmental projects around the nation and world.

On Oct. 29, Erin Brockovich will come to Tennessee Tech University to spread her message of personal empowerment. Her talk will begin at 7 p.m. in Derryberry Hall Auditorium.

A single mother of three, Brockovich took a job as a file clerk in a law firm. There, she stumbled upon medical records in a pro bono case that led to Pacific Gas & Electric paying $333 million to 600 residents in Hinkley, Calif., in 1996.

After her successes in Hinkley, she began spreading a message of personal empowerment and encouraging others to make a difference.

Since then, she has been involved in environmental cases around the country. She is involved in cases in California, Texas, Florida, Michigan, Illinois and Missouri, but projects have asked for her help from around the world.

Brockovich is author of the New York Times best-seller “Take it from Me: Life’s a Struggle, but you can Win,” and a thriller, “Rock Bottom.”

Co-sponsored by TTU’s Center Stage and the Commission on the Status of Women, the talk is free and open to the public. Derryberry Hall is at 1 William L. Jones Drive, Cookeville.
