Laton Key, a junior biology and psychology student from Baxter, had won several awards with Tennessee Tech University’s speech and debate team.
At the Tennessee Intercollegiate Forensics Association State Tournament, Key was the state champion in open debate. The university team won third in the debate sweepstakes. The tournament was held March 29-30 at Middle Tennessee State University.
At the Ruby C. Krider and Alumni Open Tournament, Key won second place in open debate and the ninth place speaker award in open debate. The TTU team also won first in debate sweepstakes, and won third in small team individual events both days of the tournament, which was Feb. 7-9 at Murray Sate University.
At the Transylvania WYRD Tournament, Key was a quarterfinalist in the open debate competition. He also won fourth place in persuasive speaking. The university team placed fifth in the sweepstakes award. The tournament was Jan, 24-25 at Transylvania University.
