The Tennessee Small Business Development Center at Tennessee Tech University will conduct a free seminar, “Excel for Small Business Part I” on Aug. 9. The second part of the seminar will be offered Aug. 16. Both classes will be from 1 to 4 p.m. in Johnson Hall, room 307 on the TTU campus.

The seminar is part of the center’s Microsoft Office 2007 skills for small business series.  Each of the classes will cover the main features of the programs within the Microsoft Office suit, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher.

“Office 2007 can be a very powerful tool for the small business owner,” said Gwen Paul, instructor for the course. “We try to help small business owners learn to use the software in ways that specifically helps them with their business.”

The two sessions will provide an opportunity for hands-on training in the use of Excel software. Topics in the first session will include Excel terminology, formatting, shortcuts, function keys and formulas.  The second will include payroll, cash flow, running balance and drop down list applications, among other things. The two sessions will be taught hands-on using computers with Windows 7 and Excel 2007.  Basic keyboarding and computer literacy skills are required but no prior experience with Excel is necessary.
