Published: Mon Jun 19, 2006Be adventurous this summer by taking a hands-on craft workshop at the Appalachian Center for Craft, a satellite campus of Tennessee Tech University.
The summer workshops are five-day intensive classes running Monday through Friday this summer until August 4, excluding the week of July 4. Classes for all skill levels and in all craft media are offered.
“With the variety of classes we offer during the summer workshop season, there’s a class for almost any interest,” said Gail Gentry, the Craft Center’s workshop and event coordinator.
“We offer classes for the beginner to the studio professional and have a great summer faculty of professional craft artists who are visiting from all over the country and abroad to teach these workshops,” she continued.
Among the 50 different workshops available at the Craft Center this summer are blacksmithing, knife making, tool making, hand-building in ceramics, functional and sculptural ceramics, weaving, natural dyes, glass blowing, stained glass, glass bead making, enameling, jewelry making, furniture making, woodturning, stone carving, watercolor and more.
“People come from all over the country to the Appalachian Center for Craft each summer to immerse themselves in this wonderfully creative environment, not to mention enjoy the gorgeous surroundings of Center Hill Lake,” said Gentry.
“Our workshop participants love the studio work, hiking trails and swimming in the lake – it’s truly a unique and relaxing experience,” she said.
The Craft Center offers a 50 percent workshop fee discount to TTU employees and students, and lodging and meals are available to all summer workshop participants, although space is limited.
The Appalachian Center for Craft is located off Interstate 40 at Exit 273 (Smithville/McMinnville). Take Highway 56 south for approximately six miles and take an immediate left after crossing Hurricane Bridge.
