John Wells, an emeritus professor of physics at Tennessee Tech University, will present his annual organ concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in the Bryan Fine Arts Building’s Wattenbarger Auditorium on campus.
He will play several organ solos, and will be joined by a flutist, harpists and brass players to present music spanning five centuries. The concert is free and open to the public.
TTU’s music and art department is currently working to raise money for much needed maintenance and repairs on the 1603-pipe organ, built in 1962. The first phase of repairs has been completed and listeners will hear a difference.
Wells is a member of the Nashville Chapter of the American Guild of Organists and has played organ recitals in several southern states. At TTU, he taught a course in the acoustics of music, which explored the science behind how instruments work. how people hear the sounds they produce and why we call some sounds music and others noise.
Angela McCuiston studied flute at TTU and now owns Music Strong, a health and fitness training program for musicians. She is principal flute in the Panama City Pops Orchestra, a member of the 129th Army Band and the assistant principal/piccolo for the Sinfonia Gulf Coast.
Angela Bayne Pistole is a harpist and piano teacher in Cookeville.
John Bohlen is a mechanical engineer with Oreck who plays trumpet with the Southern Stars Symphonic Brass Band and the Cookeville First Baptist Church Orchestra.
Dwight Wages is a founding member of the Southern Stars Symphonic Brass Band; he plays trumpet with the Cookeville Community Band. He founded the state’s Clarion Brass Quintet and frequently play solos at weddings and other special events.
Bill Boyd plays horn with the Southern Stars Symphonic Brass Band, the Cookeville Community Band and the Cookeville First Baptist Church Orchestra.
Rechel McManus plays horn with the Cookeville Community Band and the Nashville Praise Symphony and at Sparta First Baptist Church.
Carrol Gotcher is a TTU alumnus and is director of bands at Jackson County High School. He is also the president of the Cookeville Community Band. He plays euphonium with the Nashville Wind Ensemble, baritone with the Southern Stars Symphonic Brass Band, trombone with the Big Band Sounds Orchestra and Four Horns Jazz Combo and is a founding member of the Euphouria Quartet.
