For the first time, the group has received both the Outstanding and Green chapter designations from the American Chemical Society. The top 5 percent of chapters across the nation get the “outstanding” label every year.
“This is a significant accomplishment by our faculty and students,” said Jeffrey Boles, chairman of TTU’s chemistry department. “They have worked very hard to earn this award and organized many events throughout the year.”
The club was recognized for expanding an already exceptional level of activity, hosting events to reach out to the K-12 and larger Cookeville community, participating in research and societal meetings around the Southeast, and establishing an on-campus lecture series.
The green designation came from the club-organized activities designed to highlight the importance of green chemistry to people and the environment.
“An exceptional chapter that had a great year,” said the report from the American Chemical Society. “The chapter needs to continue to do what it is doing. Great work!”
