Published: Tue Oct 25, 2005The Cumberland Quintet will heat up the autumn chill with a concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at Tennessee Tech University’s Wattenbarger Auditorium.
The concert will feature a piece called “Lascivious Love Songs” by Donald Grantham, an award-winning composer from the University of Texas who will be on campus for a short residency the same week as the Cumberland Quintet show.
Based on the poetry of E.E. Cummings, Grantham’s piece was inspired by the physical aspects of love illustrated by the poet’s work.
The poems upon which the music is based illustrate scenes from a barroom fight over a woman to an impatient lover waiting in the shadows of the moon. The music, in turn, ranges from a barrel-house tune to an impressionistic night melody.
TTU’s Cumberland Quintet has toured throughout the United States and in England, and it’s members – TTU music faculty – serve on the Southeast Chamber Music Institute.
