thumb danner_formalA piece written by Tennessee Tech University music professor Greg Danner and premiered by the TTU Brass Arts Quintet has taken top prize in the Robert Avalon International Competition for Composers.

Danner’s piece, “Suite for Brass Quintet,” won first place in the professional division from the Houston-based Foundation for Modern Music. The piece was commissioned by the Kentucky Music Teachers Association and premiered on campus in April 2010.

Danner teaches music theory and composition and has been at TTU since 1994. He regularly performs with the university’s Brass Arts Quintet, which includes TTU faculty Chris McCormick and Charles Decker, trumpet; Joshua Hauser, trombone; and R. Winston Morris, tuba.

Danner has written more than 100 pieces over the years for solo and chamber groups, choral ensembles, concert bands and symphony orchestra. He has received awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers every year since 1989.
