First as an undergraduate business student and on through the higher education ranks to department chair, Jeremy Wendt found Tech’s commitment to academic excellence reason enough to stay for more than 13 years.
“TTU’s reputation for academic rigor drew me in as a student and again as a faculty member,” said Wendt. “TTU still offers a personal, small town experience. Its friendly environment, coupled with international opportunities, creates a unique atmosphere for success.”
Wendt holds multiple degrees from Tennessee Tech including an undergraduate business degree, a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, and an educational specialist degree in instructional leadership. He also holds a doctorate in administration and supervision from Tennessee State University.
He says he enjoys passing along his excitement for his fields to his students through teaching, research, writing and presenting. He has given more than 100 conference presentations nationally and internationally in Canada, Finland, Taiwan and the Czech Republic.
“I’ve been able to connect and learn from the practices of people, the cultural impacts, and the educational programs,” said Wendt. “Bringing this back to Cookeville opens the doors and minds of students, faculty and the community.”
Wendt is currently working with the chemistry department and Hamilton County Schools on a National Science Foundation grant that recruits STEM undergraduate students for high school math and science classrooms in inner city schools. He has also worked to prepare the immersive virtual reality VISION lab. Wendt has worked in conjunction with educational technology colleagues at Tech and Japan on a project that assesses the knowledge and technology preparedness on incoming university freshman.
As an academic, Wendt maintains his commitment to understanding his students’ and colleagues’ perspectives on education and engaging with their ideas.
“We all learn more when we approach problems collectively,” said Wendt. “Continually refining yourself and your work is the key to having an impact near and far.”
