Center for Global Experiences

Ghana, West Africa

Led by Dr. Queen Ogbomo and Cale Koester, this trip will take a group of students to Ghana, where participants will be involved in cultural studies/activities and perform service work at a local school in a rural village. The trip will take place from May 12-25, 2020.

The majority of this trip will be spent in Kopeyia, a rural village in Ghana, West Africa, where attendees will be immersed in daily village life and cultural exposure.  A unique aspect of this trip will be the students' ability to choose a concentration:

Group 1:   Students will participate in a one-week service-learning experience at Kopeyia School, a K-9 school in rural Ghana (http://www.kgsf.org).  Students will be active in the planning and implementation of classroom education.  *Note:  This option provides credits that can be used toward a Service Learning Certificate from TTU (https://www.tntech.edu/volunteer/slcert.php).

Group 2:  Students will enroll in a one week study at Dagbe Cultural Institute & Arts Center, a cultural school in rural Ghana (http://www.dagbeinstitute.org/). During this week they will participate in group and private lessons in drumming, dance, and craft, gaining proficiency in these skills and developing an understanding of social and cultural contexts.

While students' chosen concentration will determine their daily activities to a significant degree, both groups will get opportunities to experience elements from each concentration.
