Tennessee Tech senior Karen Short of Crossville, Tenn., will host an opening reception for her senior thesis painting show on Sunday, April 20. The reception will take place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Tennessee Tech University in the lobby of the Bryan Fine Arts building. The Bryan Fine Arts Building is located at 1150 N. Dixie Ave., Cookeville, Tenn. The reception is free and open to the public. Food and drinks will be provided.
Short’s show, "Penumbra," is an exhibition of work based on her childhood memories from her upbringing in Guinea, West Africa. Using a combination of drawing and painting materials, she alternates between obscuring and revealing the imagery in her work. The varying levels of clarity echo the way in which some memories are vivid in our recollections, while others are faded and undefined.
The large-scale paintings will be on display in the lobby gallery of the Bryan Fine Arts Building through the week, until Friday, April 25.
All Tennessee Tech art students are required to host a solo show as their culminating academic experience before graduating with their bachelor of fine arts degrees. The experience is designed to teach them how to select works for a show, to design the show’s layout in the gallery space, and to showcase the best of their body of work over their years of study at Tennessee Tech.
