About
Dr. Kate M. Chaffin is Professor and Chair of the Department of Sociology and Political Science at Tennessee
Tech University. A social work educator and academic leader with more than 20 years
of experience, her work focuses on innovative pedagogy, online education, faculty
development, and human-centered leadership. She has spent much of her career developing
new approaches to social work education, including helping to build one of the nation’s
early fully online MSW programs.
Dr. Chaffin’s scholarship explores critical and feminist pedagogy, access and belonging
in higher education, faculty development, and emerging technologies in social work
education. She is especially passionate about creating educational environments where
students and faculty can thrive.
Dr. Chaffin has a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Tennessee Tech, a Master of
Social Work from University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a Doctor of Social Work from
