Tech’s electrical engineering program tops list of Tennessee programs with highest return on investment
The electrical engineering program at Tennessee Tech topped lists in a recent report on return-on-investment for students and taxpayers at public universities and colleges in Tennessee, with five additional College of Engineering programs making the top 25.
When the Beacon Center of Tennessee examined 263 bachelor’s degree programs and the debt-to-earnings ratio of their graduates, Tech’s electrical engineering program topped the list as the highest return-on-investment for four-year programs. The other college programs on the list included chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, civil engineering and engineering technology.
The report looked at how well the state’s public colleges and universities serve students and taxpayers using data available from the U.S. Department of Education’s College Scorecard, which tracks student loan debt and postgraduation earnings of recent college graduates. Programs with the highest annual earnings compared to the debt taken on by students in individual programs scored the highest return on investment.
Because the College Scorecard data presents program-level specifics, it “provides more precise information on which degrees and areas of study at public universities provide a good value for students,” the report said.
