College of Engineering at Tennessee Tech University Announces 2023 Pinnacle Award Winner for Alumnus of the Year Richard Wright

This annual accolade is the highest achievement awarded to alumni by the College of Engineering, recognizing individuals who have demonstrated exceptional professional accomplishments, distinguished service to their profession and outstanding character and citizenship that honor the college and university.

Wright earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering in 1955 with distinction, graduating at the top of his class. He furthered his education by completing a master's degree at the University of Illinois-Urbana before returning to Tech in 1959 as an associate professor of mechanical engineering. During his tenure, Wright served as assistant dean for the college from 1976 to 1980, playing a pivotal role in developing Tennessee Tech's engineering program into the preeminent institution it is today.

Known as a tireless advocate for increasing the number of women in engineering, Wright founded the first chapter of the Society of Women Engineers in 1978 and served as its advisor for numerous years. From 1980 to 1997, he served as the Director of Technology for the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers, where he oversaw the society's worldwide research program.

Wright's commitment to public service extends beyond his professional achievements. He dedicated nine years to serving as Putnam County Commissioner and contributed his expertise to the Putnam County Regional Planning Commission for 25 years. Additionally, Wright held officer positions in the Cookeville and Tennessee Jaycees and the American Legion's Boys State, leading initiatives to provide medical and dental relief to underserved communities.
