The Bachelor of Fine Arts concentration in wood is designed to prepare the student
to become a fine artist. The integration of studio and lecture courses in the curriculum
as well as activities and enrichment opportunities encourages the skills and concepts
essential to the student’s growth as an artist. The wood program offers a strong foundation
in woodworking and furniture making. The program is composed of a series of eight
classes that focus on different aspects of woodworking and design plus general education
requirements. Each semester concentrates on one of the primary furniture forms, tables,
cabinets and chairs, while at the same time, the major technical areas, joinery, bending,
shaping and finishing are studied and practiced. Smaller assignments based on secondary
furniture forms focus on the specialist areas of veneer, inlay, structure, and production.
Special problem classes in turning, technical drawing and hand tools, round out the
curriculum.
