A faculty member in Tennessee Tech University’s School of Music ended 2024 on a high
note – literally.
Gözde Çakır Ramsey, assistant professor of flute, performed at the world-renowned
Carnegie Hall in New York City for a Dec. 18 concert with the New Manhattan Sinfonietta,
a New York-based orchestra known for celebrating Turkish culture and composers.
A native of Turkey herself, Çakır Ramsey had followed the orchestra’s work since its
establishment in 2017 by Turkish maestro Gürer Aykal, with whom she had worked as
a student.
Having the opportunity to perform with a long-admired mentor on one of music’s most
iconic stages was, according to Çakır Ramsey, “a surreal experience that I will cherish
forever.”
“Performing at Carnegie Hall is a dream come true for most musicians,” she explained.
“The opportunity to perform there was deeply meaningful, both personally and professionally.”
Çakır Ramsey adds that the invitation to appear at the concert underscores the Tech
School of Music’s reach, and the university’s growing role as a musical powerhouse.
“It demonstrates that our faculty are not only educators but also active, successful
musicians in the broader music community,” she said. “I hope our involvement at this
level of events inspires and creates opportunities for our students to achieve similar
successes in the future.”
Following the concert, Çakır Ramsey made time for sightseeing, including a Broadway
performance of “Moulin Rouge,” which she said featured “some outstanding performances.”
And while Çakır Ramsey has long been a sought-after flutist in her own right – including
performances throughout the U.S., Turkey, France, Switzerland and Kosovo – she says
the support of her fellow Golden Eagles helped make the milestone experience possible.
“Tennessee Tech has been incredibly supportive in fostering my musical growth and
providing opportunities to engage with other talented musicians,” she said. “The encouragement
from my colleagues, along with the resources available through the School of Music,
has been amazing.”
As for what’s next, Çakır Ramsey won’t be waiting long to step onto the stage again.
She is set to give a solo performance at the upcoming March 30 concert of the Bryan
Symphony Orchestra – the Upper Cumberland’s professional symphony, which operates
in partnership with Tech’s School of Music.
