In the year 2000, I started as a first-year physics major here at Tennessee Tech University. Over twenty-five years later, I am proud and excited to serve as the chair of this department, which will always hold a special place in my heart. We have a long history of providing excellent support and opportunities to our students in a “family environment” while maintaining a high degree of academic rigor. Our four concentrations allow you to specialize in astrophysics, computational physics, or another STEM field of your choice, while our pure physics concentration will give you a more traditional foundation in the field. All four concentrations promote the development of skills that are useful across a broad range of careers. We get overwhelming agreement from our alumni (myself included!) that a B.S. in Physics from Tennessee Tech provided them with a firm foundation from which they could build a successful and fulfilling career.
Our department consists of nine faculty, who are dedicated not only to their world-class research, but also have a passion for teaching. Our department has a long-standing commitment to involve undergraduate students in research and we are nationally recognized on this front.
Our Society of Physics Students can provide you with a community of support. They are active in the community with outreach programs, go on club hikes and trips to scientific locations of interests, and many other activities. Our students also present their research to the department in our weekly seminar series.
I hope I have convinced you that if you want a high-quality education in physics, with world-class research opportunities and support from faculty and other students, Tennessee Tech Physics is the right fit for you.
