Mechanical Engineering

Welcome from the Chair

Welcome to the Mechanical Engineering Department's website, and thank you for visiting us online. Here you will find information about our degree options for both undergraduate and graduate students, student organizations, faculty research, laboratories, faculty and staff, and much more.

The Mechanical Engineering Department (ME) is always an exciting, engaging place to be; and we are happy so share some of the great things happening in our degree programs. Mechanical Engineering (ME) is the largest department in the College of Engineering and overall at Tennessee Tech. The rigorous, practice-based curriculum of our Bachelor of Science and Master of Science programs is unique among many American ME programs. Mechanical Engineering encompasses skills that are indispensable across many fields in today's industry, which makes our graduates some of the most versatile engineers in the world. Because the majority of industries need mechanical engineers, this field has become the nation's largest engineering profession as measured by both permanent employment and university enrollment. In addition ot the bachelor's and master's degree programs, our ME Department also offers doctoral degrees through the College of Engineering. Tennessee Tech is accredited by SACS, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and the ME program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET

Please see the Future Undergraduate Students section in the navigation bar to the left if you are interested in learning more about our bachelor's degree options. If you are a prospective graduate student interested in admission to the M.S. or Ph.D. programs, you'll find links to more information and the application process in our Future Graduate Students section.

Our students are encouraged to grow professionally through participation in student organizations such as the Baja SAE Team, SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers), Pi Tau Sigma, ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers), SWE (Society of Women engineers), ASHRAE (American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers) and the Engineering Joint Council. Co-op opportunities are also encouraged so that students can gain hands-on work experience. Graduate students have opportunities for research through the department and through the various centers of excellence (Center for Manufacturing Research, Center for the Management, Utilization and Protection of Water Resources, and Center for Energy Systems Research).

One of the points of pride of our program is close to one hundred percent employability our graduates within few months after graduation.  The employers appreciate the hands-on experience, job-ready knowledge and skills, humility, strong work ethic, and the sense of professionalism that our graduates bring when hired. This is a great testament to our faculty and staff who work hard with our students showing sincere care and concern for their personal and professional development.  Our enrollment has been steady at about 750 undergraduate and 70 graduate students. I invite you to explore the “ME Department News” section on our website and current posts on social media.  We would also welcome you to schedule a visit to the department to learn more about the programs and take a tour of our laboratories and facilities.
