Intramural sports are a part of campus life at Tech

Teams compete in an intramural sand volleyball game at Tech.
The Intramural Sports program at Tennessee Tech University has one of the highest
participation rates on campus. An average of over 2,000 students plays intramural
sports each semester.
Each spring and fall semester the Intramural Sports office offers 24 leagues, tournaments,
and contests. The difference between each semester is the sports offered.
“We are enjoying the inside sports, but we are excited for the weather to warm up
and get back outside. We are always excited for each sport,” Ellie West, who works
for campus intramurals, said.
The spring semester has major sports like basketball, volleyball, and water polo.
Significant sports such as softball, flag football and outdoor soccer are offered
in the fall.
Intramurals are important to Tech; it gives students an opportunity to do something
on campus with their peers, according to West. Students get to continue playing sports
they enjoy on a fun yet competitive level.
Multiple different leagues are offered, depending on the sport, to ensure a positive
competition experience for all participants. Most sports offer the opportunity for
men and women to compete separately. Co-recreational leagues are sometimes available.
The sports are divided into three different leagues based on the skill of participants
or the desired competition level.
The elite league is for teams and individuals with above-average skill who desire
a high level of competition. The recreational league is for players and teams of different
skill levels who want a relaxed and fun atmosphere with occasional competitive match
ups. The casual league is offered for select sports and is for beginner-level players
and intended for fun and relaxed play.
Competitions still to come this spring include NCAA March Madness, March 14; Sand
Volleyball, March 27; Ultimate Frisbee, March 27; Badminton, March 30; Inner-Tube
Water Polo, April 3; Super Smash Bros Tournament, April 4; and Chess, April 11.
Intramural sports also have job opportunities for students who love sports and have
playing or officiating experience.
