Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR)
Tennessee Tech - Reports to the University President
Successful candidate will begin no sooner than August 1, but will work with retiring FAR, Jeff Roberts, Ph.D., (has served 20 years), beginning as soon as possible. Successful candidate is encouraged to attend Southern Conference Spring Meeting May 26-28.
Key Requirements & Characteristics
- Faculty Status: Must hold faculty rank and be a full-time professor at the institution or a full-time administrator who holds faculty rank.
- No Athletic Role: Cannot hold administrative or coaching positions within the athletics department.
- Academic Commitment: Must be dedicated to upholding academic integrity and the institution's educational mission.
- Knowledgeable: Needs to develop and maintain an understanding of NCAA rules, institutional policies and the athletics program.
- Advocate for Student-Athletes: Serves as a voice for student-athlete well-being, ensuring a positive experience and academic success. Being an advocate for student-athlete welfare requires a willingness to listen, observe and investigate.
- Rapid change: Capability to work amidst a rapidly changing environment, and amongst a wide community of people beyond students and faculty.
- Attendance at games: Should regularly attend games/matches.
- Sports: A love and appreciation of sports is essential.
- Travel: Being willing and excited to travel. Attend related NCAA and Southern Conference meetings.
- Be a self-starter.
Core Responsibilities
- Academic Oversight: Monitors academic performance, course enrollment and progress toward graduation for student-athletes.
- Compliance: Works with compliance offices to ensure adherence to NCAA and conference rules and assists with waivers/appeals.
- Institutional Control: Provides faculty oversight to maintain the integrity of the athletics program.
- Liaison: Connects the president, provost, athletic director, faculty and student-athletes, communicating the athletic program's role within the university.
- Welfare: Addresses student-athlete concerns and chairs hearings on financial aid or other issues.
