Title VI and Limited English Proficiency
Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VI) requires Tennessee Tech to provide language assistance to persons with Limited English Proficiency (LEP) in relation to university programs and activities. Failure to do so may constitute discrimination based on national origin.
Avaza Language Services
Tennessee Tech, through the State of Tennessee, contracts with Avaza to provide translation services to students or employees with LEP. This service is available 24/7, 365 days a year in over two hundred languages. The most requested service is On-Demand Phone Interpreting.
To request On-Demand Interpreting:
- Dial 800-482-8292
- Press 1 for Spanish or 2 for Other Languages
- Be ready to provide:
- Department Access Code
- Your Name
- Requested Language
- Wait for Interpreter to being your session
- Complete Title VI Interpretation Service Log at conclusion of session
Additional Translation Services
Title VI Interpretation Service Log
Regardless of the type of translation service used, the employee assisting the student or employee must complete the Title VI Interpretation Service Log at the conclusion of the translation session.
Please use this form to document information regarding the session. Be sure to include:
- Date of service
- Name of employee who assisted the student or employee
- Employee email address
- Language requested
- Access code (located on the back of the placard provided to your office or department)
- A brief description of how the requested service is related to a Tennessee Tech program or activity.
Restrictions on Translation Services
Do not share the department/office access code with any unauthorized users.
Only use these translation services in relation to Tennessee Tech program or activity.
