About Manufacturing and Industrial Systems Engineering

 

The Department of Manufacturing and Industrial Systems Engineering (MISE) prepares students to design, build, improve and lead the technologies, processes and systems that power modern industry.

Located in the heart of one of the nation's strongest manufacturing economies, the department brings together manufacturing systems, engineering technology, industrial and systems engineering, automation, and engineering management to prepare graduates for high-demand careers that drive innovation, productivity and economic growth.

The department delivers an interdisciplinary curriculum through bachelor's master's and minor programs that combine strong engineering and technical foundations with hands-on laboratory experiences, applied learning and real-world problem solving.

Whether developing new technologies, improving operational performance, implementing advanced manufacturing solutions, or leading engineering teams, alumni are equipped to solve complex technical challenges and drive progress in an increasingly connected and technology-driven world.

Engineering Education for Modern Industry

Today’s industries need engineering professionals who can work across the boundaries of technology, systems and management. MISE provides students in its undergraduate and graduate programs the technical knowledge, problem-solving skills and systems perspective needed to understand how products are made, how technologies are implemented and integrated, how processes and operations can be improved, and how engineering projects and organizations are managed.

Applied Learning and Problem Solving

Our students connect classroom knowledge with application through laboratory experiences, projects and real-world problem solving. Depending on area of study, students may work with technologies and methods used in automation, robotics, mechatronics, additive manufacturing, metal casting, smart manufacturing, systems analysis, quality and process improvement. They learn engineering principles and how those principles are applied to improve products, processes, technologies and systems in real-world environments.

MISE faculty bring teaching and technical expertise to disciplines that require people who understand how equipment, processes, information and people work together as part of larger systems.
