Communications & Marketing - Use of AI in University Communications

Guidelines for Use of AI in University Communications

Tennessee Tech’s communications reflect real people, experiences and opportunities. To maintain trust and accuracy in our storytelling, we must use authentic photos, videos and graphics that accurately depict our campus community and activities and written content that reflects the brand voice of the university.

Generative or AI-produced images or videos should only be used for university communications when specifically approved by the Office of Communications & Marketing. AI tools used for editing authentic media (enhancing, resizing, color-correcting, e.g.) are permitted, but AI must not be used to fabricate people, events, locations or scenes that did not occur.

Tennessee Tech speaks with a friendly, intelligent and supportive brand voice that reflects a genuine community committed to putting students first. Use of AI for written communications is not prohibited and does not require OCM approval; however, this brand voice must be reflected.

Use caution when using AI-produced communications of any kind and remember they

  • Are never a final product
  • Are not original or differentiating
  • Might contain mistakes
  • Should not include private or confidential information
  • Should never replace real experiences

Full human editing, review and approval is required of all AI-generated or altered materials.

These guidelines apply to any university materials, whether printed or electronic format, that are produced for general distribution or display in order to inform the public about any facet of Tennessee Tech.
