Migrating Course Content

Migration of course content from D2L to Canvas is a multi-step process. During our transition to Canvas, we have offered different types of migration assistance depending on the course, semester offering, and faculty access. Regardless of migration process, it is important for faculty to prepare their course content for migration following the steps below.

For courses that were not requested within the assisted course migration process, information for manual migration can also be found below.

Faculty are welcome to contact citl@tntech.edu with questions regarding the migration process. We are happy to assist you!

Preparing Course Content for Migration

As we continue to migrate courses from D2L iLearn to Canvas, it is important that faculty review their course materials and ensure their course content is up-to-date and in an exportable format. This includes:

1) ensuring all video (mp4) content has been transferred to YuJa Media and
2) Course Files are organized and up to date.

These two things will help while we work on migrating course content. View the steps and video tutorials below to learn more.

Manual Migration

An alternative to the assisted migration requests is to manually export course content from D2L iLearn and import into a Canvas semeste course shell, Master Course, or Sandbox. The steps for exporting content from D2L iLearn are outlined in the Canvas Faculty Training course in module 5.4.1.

Please note, the training is set to require completion of each module in order. If you have not already done so, you will need to complete the modules and activities prior to 5.4.1 in order to view the page.

Our team is happy to review course content with faculty and provide insight on the best route for migrating the content manually. Interested faculty can schedule a consultation with their school/college's assigned Instructional Designer using our bookings page or join us for an upcoming workshop session.

Important Dates

  • October 30, 2026: Deadline to submit a Course Migration Request Form
  • December 10, 2026: Deadline to complete a manual export if you may need assistance from the CITL
  • December 31, 2026: Tennessee Tech’s access to iLearn/D2L ends

We highly recommend submitting a migration request by October 30 or following the manual archiving instructions in Module 5.4.1 before the end of the semester on December 10. Once the university closes for winter break, offices will not reopen until after our access to D2L iLearn has ended. The CITL will continue to provide support for faculty organizing imported files in the spring.
