Tennessee Tech named one of the best colleges for engineering by Colleges of Distinction
Tennessee Tech has garnered recognition as one of the best colleges for engineering majors, named an Engineering College of Distinction for 2022 by Colleges of Distinction, a unique guide for college-bound students.
Colleges of Distinction hand-picks a selection of top schools that are well equipped to provide a personalized education catered to students’ interests, going beyond traditional ranking models to evaluate schools whose undergraduate experiences are grounded in a philosophy of well-rounded, individualized engagement.
To be included as an Engineering College of Distinction, institutions must have engineering programs with a multidisciplinary, collaborative and well-connected curriculum, and demonstrate the following characteristics:
- Proven stability and quality, demonstrated by ABET accreditation.
- Practical experiences offered through internships, co-ops and experiential learning.
- Collaborative work in the classroom, so students learn to be effective team members and leaders.
- Soft skills—such as communication, leadership, and teamwork—are emphasized to ensure that students are not just skilled engineers, but also resilient and capable professionals.
- Facility investments keep schools’ technology up to date while supporting students along their academic journey.
- Dedicated advising and counseling is available to be specifically geared toward engineering students.
- High-impact practices are fully embraced within the engineering curriculum.
- Industry connections cultivate an environment for students to create a valuable professional network.
Tech’s College of Engineering is home to 15 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, three research centers and 30 student organizations and clubs.
“Tech is renowned for its quality and for providing hands-on, interdisciplinary learning. It’s an honor to be specifically recognized for provided highly individualized engineering education,” said Joseph C. Slater, dean of engineering. “More importantly, potential students can come here knowing they will not only be well-prepared in engineering upon graduation, but also getting a great start in their careers.”
The Colleges of Distinction organization, founded by parents and admissions counselors in 2000, recognizes universities for their success in four categories: Engaged Students, Great Teaching, Vibrant Communities and Successful Outcomes. Institutions are selected from submitted nominations from high school guidance counselors and college administrators and after extensive research and interviewing.
In addition to being named an Engineering College of Distinction, Tech received an across-the-board designation as a College of Distinction, with additional special recognition as a Tennessee College of Distinction, Public College of Distinction, and in other categories recognizing career development and military support, and programs in business, education and nursing.
