Assessing Flight Foundations
Flight Foundations is designed to provide students with a shared foundation of critical
thinking, cultural awareness, and creativity, that supports not only their success
at Tennessee Tech but prepares them to navigate the challenges of tomorrow. Assessment
is an important part of the Flight Foundations curriculum, helping the University
understand how well students are achieving the intended learning outcomes and where
opportunities exist to strengthen the curriculum.
Assessment Cycle
The Flight Foundations assessment process is built upon the Plan, Do, Check, Act assessment cycle. Through this cycle, the General Education Curriculum Committee and instructors teaching Flight Foundation courses are establishing expectations for student learning, engaging students in the classroom, evaluating student learning, and using that evaluation to identify and implement meaningful improvements. This process supports a culture of continuous improvement and helps ensure that the Flight Foundations curriculum continues to provide students with meaningful opportunities to develop the knowledge and skills expected of Tennessee Tech graduates.

Curriculum Maps
Curriculum maps provide a visual representation of how Flight Foundations learning
outcomes align with each approved course. The curriculum map serves as an important
connection between the intended curriculum and the assessment process. By identifying
where outcomes are taught and assessed, the map helps ensure that assessment activities
provide meaningful evidence of student learning.
Rubrics
Rubrics provide a consistent framework for evaluating student performance in Flight Foundations courses. Common rubrics help provide consistency in the assessment of student learning while allowing faculty to retain flexibility in how learning is taught and demonstrated within individual courses. Rubrics also make assessment results more meaningful. Rather than simply determining whether an assignment was completed successfully, a rubric can provide information about the level at which students are demonstrating particular knowledge or skills.
