Frequently Asked Questions
Starting your nursing journey is a big decision. We've compiled answers to frequently asked questions to help you better understand the program, explore opportunities, and feel confident in your next steps.
- » What are the application requirements?
BSN: 3.0 Cumulative College GPA, A&P I and one other science course completed, 24 hours of college credit, completion of the HESI A2 entrance exam. Students starting as new freshmen who receive the Presidential Scholarship may bypass these application requirements and receive early admission before starting their freshmen year.
- » Do I need healthcare experience before applying?
Healthcare experience is not required to apply, but it definitely improves both your application and your readiness for clinical coursework.
- » What is direct admission to the nursing program? How can I qualify?
Direct Admission is available only to students starting at Tennessee Tech as new freshmen in Nursing. They need a 23 ACT composite and 3.4 HS GPA (the same criteria as the Presidential Scholarship).
- » How large are nursing classes?
Students are part of a nursing cohort of up to 100 students each semester. Lecture courses are typically offered in sections of approximately 50 students, while clinical and lab groups are intentionally limited to six students, providing opportunities for individualized instruction and hands-on learning.
- » When do students begin clinical experiences?
Clinical experiences begin once students complete prerequisite coursework. Students then participate in five semesters of hands-on learning, giving them extensive opportunities to apply classroom knowledge in real healthcare settings.
- » What additional expenses should I expect (uniforms, equipment, testing fees)?
In addition to tuition, students should anticipate costs associated with professional nursing preparation, including the HESI A2 admission exam (currently approximately $51), scrubs (typically $50–$75 per set), and appropriate clinical footwear. Additional program-related expenses may apply, and students will receive information about requirements and costs before they are needed.
- » Can I work while attending nursing school?
Many students find nursing school to be a significant time commitment. However, if you choose to work, healthcare-related positions can provide valuable experience that complements your education and future career goals.
- » Can I meet with a nursing advisor before applying?
Yes! Email nursing@tntech.edu to connect with an advisor in our Nursing Student Success Center.
- » How does a BSN prepare me for graduate school?
A BSN equips students with the knowledge, clinical experience, and professional skills needed for advanced nursing study. Whether your goal is to become a nurse practitioner, nurse educator, healthcare leader, or researcher, a BSN provides the academic foundation for graduate education. Many of our graduates continue their journey through our graduate nursing programs, allowing them to build on the skills and relationships developed during their undergraduate experience.
