Admission Requirements for the
Teacher Education Program (TEP)

Admission Deadlines

Fall: August 1 | Spring: January 5 | Summer: May 1

NOTE: Individuals who have been previously dismissed from Tech's Teacher Education Program cannot be admitted/readmitted into the licensure program for three (3) consecutive semesters (including summer).

Follow Steps 1 - 7

Application must be completed first. All other steps can be completed in any order.

Step 1 / Submit Application for Admission to Teacher Education Program (TEP)

This form must be filed once a student has reached 30 or more credit hours, excluding ADP course credit.

Step 2 / Complete Background Check Process

Complete the required Tennessee Tech Background Check and Fingerprinting process through IdentoGO by MorphoTrust USA.

This process is a requirement must be completed through the Office of Teacher Education (no exceptions).

Cardscan Processing:

If you reside outside of Tennessee or are unable to visit an IdentoGo location, you can complete the fingerprinting process via cardscan processing.

Step 3 / Complete the Interview Request Form & Process

If a date is not available that you can attend an interview, please keep checking back for more dates. Do not complete the form until you are sure you can attend on the date you select.

The purpose of the interview process is for the Office of Teacher Education staff to gain knowledge of a teacher candidate’s ability to perform in a professional setting, provide insight into the candidate's understanding of the profession, and also giving candidates interview experience.

Step 4 / Complete the Disposition Process

Please submit the:

Disposition Self-Assessment & Request Form 

You must list two instructors as "raters": one education instructor and one content area instructor

If you are uncertain about which instructors to use, please contact Carrie Harris, cmharris@tntech.edu, for guidance. 

Candidates with an AST degree are exempt from the disposition process since they are required for degree completion through the community college.

Step 5 / Meet Testing Requirements (ACT, SAT, or Praxis Core)

Admission to the TEP requires passing scores on one (1) of the following three (3) exams:

1) A superscore of 21 or higher on the ACT
An ACT superscore is calculated by averaging your highest attempts for each section of the exam. You must select Tennessee Tech University as a score recipient for Tech to receive a copy of your results. The ACT recipient code for Tennessee Tech is 4012.

2) A score of 1080 or higher on the SAT
Reading, Writing & Language, and Math sections only; essay is optional. You must select Tennessee Tech University as a score recipient for Tech to receive a copy of your results. The SAT recipient code for Tennessee Tech is 1804.

The Praxis Core combined exam (5752) is also available, which includes all three sections of the exam (Reading, Writing, and Math). 

You must select Tennessee Tech as a score recipient for Tech to receive a copy of your results. The Education Testing Service (ETS) recipient code for Tennessee Tech is 1804.

Step 6 / Complete These Course Requirements:

    • ENGL 1010 and 1020 or equivalent with a C or higher.
      FOED 2050 or equivalent with a B or higher.
    • For ARED-ARED 2020 must be taken in addition to FOED 2050.
    • For EXPW-EXPW 1021 must be taken in addition to FOED 2050.

Note: You are exempt from FOED 2050 classes, if you had one of the following major-based equivalents:

    • For HEC-HEC 2800
    • For AGED-AGED 2120
    • For MUED-MUED 1820

Step 7 / Meet established GPA of 2.75

(excluding developmental classes)
