New College of Engineering building named for successful transportation industry executive and engineering alumnus Ashraf Islam

Ashraf Islam portraitTennessee Tech’s Board of Trustees today approved naming the College of Engineering’s new student-centered engineering building for alumnus Ashraf Islam, who has committed $3 million to make Tech’s first engineering facility in 50 years a reality.

The highly respected Texas businessman credits his Tennessee Tech civil engineering degree for his success in the transportation industry and is well known for his philanthropic and professional accomplishments.

The new Ashraf Islam Engineering Building will be a 100,000-square-foot showcase anchoring Tech’s engineering corridor, fusing innovation, smart building technology and a living water laboratory to foster interdisciplinary and collaborative learning while inspiring new generations of engineers.

“We are extremely proud of Mr. Islam’s success and his support of our students,” said Joseph C. Slater, Dean of the College of Engineering. “His gift enables the college to make a major leap forward in continuing to provide the best engineering education possible.”

The Ashraf Islam Engineering Building is designed around students first, providing labs and classrooms that reflect the cross-disciplinary nature of modern engineering, in which students can learn to apply their skills outside of the classroom to solve engineering problems in today’s complex teams.

The university will celebrate more than 40 donors this fall when it breaks ground on the new $62 million building.
