Need a Change of Scenery? Here Are Some of the Best Study Spots on Tech's Campus

Sometimes, all it takes is a new environment to help you focus, stay motivated, or finally finish that assignment you've been putting off. Whether you prefer complete silence, a cozy couch, or a coffee shop atmosphere, Tennessee Tech’s campus has plenty of spots that fit different study styles. We asked students where they like to study and why. Here are a few of their favorite places around campus.

The Library

If you need peace and quiet, the third floor of the library is a favorite. It's one of the quietest places on campus, making it perfect for reading, writing papers, or preparing for exams without distractions.

One student shared, "I like the third floor because it's quiet, it's filled with books that have been accumulated over the years that contain much history and knowledge, and it provides a comfortable space to work." Sometimes, the best motivation is simply being surrounded by an environment that's built for learning.

Empty Classrooms

Not everyone needs a completely new setting to stay productive. For some students, familiar spaces help them get into the right mindset.

"I like studying in empty classrooms in buildings I'm familiar with because my brain is used to learning in those spaces, so it's easy to focus," one student explained. If you happen to find an open classroom between classes, it can be a great place to spread out your notes and work without too many interruptions.

Poet’s or Soul Craft

If you're someone who enjoys a little background noise while studying, local coffee shops like Poet’s (in the library) and Soul Craft (across the street on Mahler) are popular choices.

One student said, "I like the environment, and when I study, I try to have a reward with it. It also helps me lock in and not get distracted doomscrolling if I surround myself with other people." Whether it's your favorite coffee, a sweet treat, or simply being around other people, these spaces can make studying feel a little less overwhelming.

TJ Farr Student Lounge

Sometimes comfort is just as important as quiet. The student lounge in the TJ Farr building offers comfortable seating, tables, and a welcoming atmosphere.

"I like the couches and tables in TJ Farr. Plus, people write cute and encouraging notes and stick them on the cork boards every now and then," a student shared. It's a reminder that even during stressful weeks, small acts of encouragement can brighten your day.

The Back of the RUC

Looking for somewhere a little more relaxed? Several students mentioned the back of the Roaden University Center near Chick-fil-A as a favorite place to study. It's convenient if you want to grab lunch or a coffee between study sessions, and it offers a comfortable place to work without feeling too isolated. You can find seating inside, outside, or upstairs!

Find Your Perfect Study Spot

Everyone studies differently and sometimes finding the right environment can make all the difference. Whether you prefer complete silence in the library, the familiar feel of an empty classroom, the energy of a coffee shop, or a cozy student lounge, campus has a space for you.

As finals, midterms, or busy weeks roll around, consider trying somewhere new. You might just discover your new favorite place to study.
