Online Students: Here Are Some of the Best Study Spots to Keep You Focused

Online classes offer flexibility, but studying from home every day can sometimes feel isolating. Without a traditional classroom or campus routine, finding the right environment can make a big difference in staying motivated, focused, and connected.

We asked online students where they like to study and why. Here are a few of their favorite study spots.

Outside on a Patio or Deck

Sometimes, the best way to refresh your mind is to step outside. Studying on a patio, deck, or other outdoor space can provide a change of scenery while giving you the chance to enjoy some fresh air and natural sounds.

"I love to be outside. It helps ground me, and the nature sounds keep me focused," Tania, a business student, shared.

If you find yourself feeling stuck or distracted while studying, moving outside for a while could be just the change you need.

A Café or Common Area by a Window

For students who enjoy a little background noise, a café or common area near a window can provide a comfortable environment for getting work done. Being around other people can also make studying feel less isolating.

Tania also said, "I love coffee, so being in a café with the coffee smell gives me comfort and an overall boost of energy.”

Grab your favorite drink, find a spot near a window, and settle in for a study session. Sometimes a small routine can make a big difference in motivation.

The Library

Even as an online student, you don't have to miss out on the traditional library study experience. Libraries offer a quiet environment, plenty of workspace, and an atmosphere designed for learning.

Sydney, an MPS student, said, "I like going to a library where I can study around books, and I also have a study playlist that I like to listen to.”

If you need to concentrate on a paper, catch up on readings, or prepare for an exam, the library can provide the structure and quiet you need.

Public Spaces

For some online students, being around other people is an important part of staying motivated. Studying in a public space can provide a sense of community, even when your classes are happening online.

"I find that I study much better in public spaces because being around people makes me feel less alone, especially because being in online courses limits peer interaction," Carson, a business student, explained.

Carson also shared, "I definitely miss being around classmates and having a little bit of healthy competition and the sort of 'cohort' experience."

A coffee shop, library, community space, or other public setting can help recreate some of that feeling of being part of a group, even if everyone around you is working on something different.

Find What Works for You

There isn't one perfect study spot for everyone. Some students need quiet, while others thrive with background noise and the energy of people around them. The key is finding an environment that helps you feel comfortable, focused, and motivated.

As Tania put it, "Working and doing online classes is not easy, but balancing calm studying has been so helpful to keep me motivated."

If your usual study routine is starting to feel stale, try changing your surroundings. Step outside, visit a café, find a quiet corner in the library, or study somewhere with a little more activity. A simple change of scenery might be exactly what you need to make your next study session more productive.
