National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)
The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Inc. (NPHC) was founded in 1930 to foster cooperation among historically African American fraternities and sororities, oversee programs and activities, and serve as a united voice for all member organizations. Each of the nine founding organizations emerged during a time when African Americans were denied rights and opportunities available to others. They created strong bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood with a shared purpose: to promote positive social change.
At Tennessee Tech, we currently host three NPHC fraternities and two sororities. These organizations are dedicated to social change, community awareness, and service, engaging students through educational, cultural, and economic initiatives.
How to Join an NPHC fraternity or sorority
Each NPHC organization brings in new members through a process called Membership Intake, which occurs at different times throughout the year depending on the chapter’s schedule and membership needs. Some organizations conduct intake each semester, while others do so annually.
When a chapter is accepting new members, they often host informational meetings where they explain membership criteria. These events are typically advertised through flyers and campus announcements.
If you are interested in joining an NPHC organization or have questions about the process, contact the Fraternity & Sorority Life Office.
Requirements to Join an NPHC Organization
To be eligible to join an NPHC fraternity or sorority, students must:
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Have community service experience
- Be involved in clubs or campus/community activities
Each organization also has its own specific membership requirements set by their national organization and Tennessee Tech chapter. Contact the chapter you are interested in for details.
