2025 Biology Holiday Award Winners

In the case that multiple individuals were nominated for the same award, the winner was chosen by number of nominations and strength of supporting comments with each submission. The winners were announced and awarded at our department holiday party on December 19th, and we’re happy to finally share them with you here! 


The Golden Pipette Award – Ari Mortensen
For excellence and precision in research, whether in the lab, field, or computational realm.

Mentor of the Year – Dr. Carla Hurt
For exceptional guidance of students or colleagues.

Rising Star Award – Dr. Mostafa Rahnama
For a newer faculty member, staff member, or grad student making an immediate impact.

The “Lost in the Field (or Lab)” Award – Sahar Salimi
For someone who gets so absorbed in their work they practically live there.

The MacGyver Award – Mr. James Ventrice
For creative problem-solving using improvised materials, quick thinking, or sheer willpower.

Always in a Meeting Award – Dr. Steven Hayslette
For the colleague whose calendar is so full it should be a cautionary tale.

Grad Student MVP – Sarah Elliott
For the grad student whose hard work, leadership, or perseverance has been a backbone of their lab or the department.

Undergrad Whisperer Award – Justin King
For someone with an exceptional ability to teach, support, and inspire undergraduates.

Ray of Sunshine Award – Cindy Scruggs
For positivity that lifts morale and brightens the department.

Hidden Hero Award – Dr. Shawn Krosnick
For indispensable contributions behind the scenes that deserve the spotlight.
